The roots of an artistic inquiry
Giuliano Grittini’s story begins long before his international exhibitions and collaborations. It is the tale of a passion sparked by a camera received in childhood, nurtured through studies in graphic design and fine-art printing, and developed in 1960s Milan amidst artists, publishers, and avant-garde movements. It is a journey defined by curiosity, technical skill, and constant experimentation—one that, over the years, has given rise to a unique artistic language.
Training in graphic arts and fine art printmaking techniques
A passion for photography led Giuliano Grittini to pursue studies in graphic design, aiming to deepen his understanding not only of visual language but also of fine art printing techniques. Lithography, screen printing, etching, and engraving became the tools with which he built the foundation of his artistic future. His training combined creative sensibility with a profound knowledge of the medium—elements that continue to characterize his work to this day.
At the Heart of an Artistic Revolution: Milan in the 1960s
In 1960s Milan—a crossroads of ideas and experimentation—Giuliano Grittini began collaborating with some of the most important figures in Italian and international art. With his camera always around his neck, he entered artists' studios, documenting their work and forging relationships that would shape his own creative vision. Alongside masters such as Enrico Baj, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mario Schifano, and Mimmo Rotella, he developed his own approach to fine art printing, combining artistic inquiry with technical innovation. A meeting that left its mark: among the most significant experiences of those years was his encounter with Andy Warhol, who had come to the studio to oversee the production of some of his screen prints. Grittini recalls the American artist's meticulous attention to color and his desire to make each print unique through constant chromatic variations. It was a brief yet intense exchange—one that confirmed how integral the dialogue between artist and printer is to the creative process, and reinforced his conviction that technique and experimentation must always go hand in hand.

1988: Meeting Alda Merini
In 1988, Giuliano Grittini met Alda Merini. From that moment, a personal and artistic bond was forged that would last for over twenty years. Through thousands of photographs and numerous publishing projects, he became a privileged witness to the poet's life, chronicling her daily existence with an authentic and deeply respectful gaze.
The partnership with Alda Merini represents one of the most intense chapters of his journey. His images do not merely document the poet; they capture her character, vulnerability, and strength, transforming photography into a poetic testament.
Golden Light, where light becomes matter
With *Golden Light*, Giuliano Grittini opens a new chapter in his artistic exploration. Images, words, and marks combine with applications of gold and silver leaf, the transparency of Plexiglas, and intense layers of color, giving rise to luminous, dynamic works that are in constant transformation. Light becomes an integral part of the artwork: it permeates surfaces, creates reflections and depth, and alters the perception of the composition depending on the space and the viewer's perspective. It is an exploration that bridges pop culture and abstraction, memory and contemporaneity, transforming universal images and symbols into new visual experiences.
Collaborations
Giuliano Grittini’s artistic journey is defined by encounters, cross-pollination, and collaborations that have given rise to artworks, exhibitions, and cultural projects in Italy and abroad. Today, this exploration continues with new partners, new ideas, and new creative challenges.
